Visa Requirements

Visas can be obtained:-

  • at all airports in Tanzania
  • as well as border crossings

Apply in advance

It is recommended that you apply in advance with the Tanzania Embassy in your own country.

 

NB If you are entering Tanzania via Nairobi you may require an additional transit visa

Costs

Visas are issued at $50 for single entry and $100 for double entry. The price may vary depending on your country of origin.

Validity

The visa is valid for 6 months from date of issue. At the time of issue you have to prove that you plan to leave Tanzania within 3 months of arrival.

Currency

The local currency is Tanzania shillings in units of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10,000. The easiest acceptable foreign currency is US dollars.

Forged US $

There may be some forged US dollars in circulation. These are usually the smaller denominations. You will usually be given change in Tanzanian shillings.

 

You will find that people in rural areas may be reluctant to accept some US$ bills. It may be worth changing some $ into Tanzanian shillings at the airport.

ATMs

Can be found in the major cities.

Major credit cards

You will find that most expensive hotels and restaurants take major credit cards.

Travellers cheques

Not all places take travellers cheques. Travellers cheques can be encashed at bureau de change or authorized money changers in the major cities.
